Music Fan Survey Preliminary Results

November 18, 2014

As some of you may have noticed, we are conducting a casual survey of music fans.  While we are still collecting data, here’s an interim look at a couple of the results.

I have to say that I’m not surprised by any of these results, but it is worth noting that some are wildly opposite to what some companies would have you believe (Pandora, Google, Sirius, Spotify).

The biggest secret to success in the music industry since I began my career at Motown during the mid 1960s has been that sales are mostly generated by word of mouth. I’ve seen no evidence of this ever changing.

I think a great question to ask would be – “When a friend recommends a artist to you where do you go to check them out?”

Ofcourse it’s personal recommendations that is the number one route. I think the bigger tell is are they then going directly to Youtube or Facebook or Spotify to follow up on the recommendation.
